Overview

Purpose

Demonstrates various tools for real-time terrain analysis.

How to Use

The MGRS Grid, Contours, Overlay, Overlay Maximum Angle and Add Gridloc Marker tools function by simple checkbox, dropdown selection or slider UI controls.

The terrain panel appears by default on scene launch and is divided into the following options:

GUI Debug Menu Navigation

Top Options

Toggle format of terrain maps; use the arrows to select between Split LMAB (default) and Single LMAB formats. System/System2 display various real-time stats.

General

Clear Terrain – Removes an in-progress or completely loaded terrain map from the scene.
Clear Data Cache – Removes …\AppData\LocalLow\USC-ICT\Ride\datacache folder; use this command in the event terrain maps fail to load properly.
Center Camera – Places the camera at the defined map center of the terrain map.

Load Terrain

Load Trees – Click to toggle off/on. Replaces low-detail tree geometry in the map with various high-fidelity SpeedTree objects; note, may not be available in all maps.
Use Camera Pos As Start – Terrain map streams into scene from approximate scene camera location; used in conjunction with Radius slider.
Radius – Adjust the slider to change the distance at which terrain tiles are rendered from the current camera position.
Use Asset Bundles – Test command for future delivery method of terrain map data.
Progress – Indicator of approximate completeness for the streaming of the current terrain map into the scene.
Time – Tracks how long the terrain map took to stream into the scene, reaching 100% completion.
Plane – Instances a simple plane object for test purposes; note, does not have tree objects.

Tip

If steaming terrain on a mobile device (Android/iOS) strongly recommend setting the Radius to a value of < 800 to avoid running out of device memory.

Load Terrain – Split LMAB Format & LOD

Select a terrain map, choose a LOD setting (lowest selected by default) and then click Load Terrain to begin streaming that terrain map data into the scene. Overall progress statements incrementally appear until loading finishes (1.0 value).

Load Terrain – Single LMAB Format & LOD

Select a terrain map, choose a LOD setting (lowest selected by default) and then click Load Terrain to begin streaming that terrain map data into the scene. Overall progress statements incrementally appear until loading finishes (1.0 value).

Important

The steaming of Single LMAB terrain maps, with the exception of those with the “s3” location designation, only function while on the ICT domain. If remote, ensure your ICT VPN is active.

Tip

Navigation Controls:

WASD keys – Move the camera forward/backward/left/right
Q/E keys – Lower and raise the camera
Use the J key to toggle “free-look” mouse cursor control

Note, terrain loading menu cannot be toggled off currently. Use the top arrows to switch to the smaller system menu.

Scene Location & Name

Setup Requirements

Utilize the Grid Contour Toggle tools by adding related script and prefabs to your scene. Refer to the example scene for all components.

ExampleGridContourToggle Script

Add this script to an empty object in your scene to enable the contour tools. This script is derived from ExampleLoadTerrain, hence the terrain loading debug panel. Modify as needed to suit your own needs.

LocationMarker Prefab

To enable the Gridloc Marker tool, add the LocationMarker prefab to your scene, then disable it from startup. The related prefab under the Canvas object will handle the UI.

Canvas and Prefabs

Add a Canvas object to the scene to organize the different UI elements. Next, add the following prefabs as child objects:

RideSystems Prefab

Instance the RideSystems prefab in your scene to enable the various necessary RIDE systems. Expand it in the Hierarchy panel, choose ResourceLoader, and add the LocationMarker prefab to the Unit Prefabs section.

Camera

Recommend adding the Simple Terrain Camera script to the Camera object, per the controls described above for manipulating the camera at run-time.

Overview

Important

This example utilizes the A* Pathfinding Project Pro package which can be obtained from the Unity Asset Store. This solution is optional for RIDE users currently.

Purpose

Demonstrates the dynamic navigation of different unit types to an arbitrary waypoint under a severe weather event affecting ground conditions.

How to Use

Allow the terrain to stream completely, then choose to either left-click anywhere on the map to instantiate a single unit of a given type. Toggle units using the button in the upper-right corner. Alternatively, right-click to instantiate one unity of each type: Dismounted, Wheeled and Tracked.

Next, right-click anywhere on the map to designate a waypoint. Units will begin to navigate to said waypoint.

During this time, press the F key to start a rain even that will transform any areas classified as dirt or non-paved to mud that will in turn shift the pathfinding route of that unit to they waypoint.

Also, middle-click at any point along the intended route to detonate an IED that will then alter the route taken by the unit at that location.

Press the F key again to end the rain event and “dry out” the terrain.

At any time, press the R key to reset all input and units to the starting defaults.

Setup Requirements

Utilize the ground classification, weather event, camera movement, destruction, terrain streaming, and unit navigation by adding the ExampleGroundClassificationWeather script to the scene.

ExampleGroundClassificationWeather Script

Add this script to an empty object in your scene, and then modify the parameters as needed to suit the needs of your scene. Ensure the relevant scene objects are included in each field.

Camera

Refer to the Rain Particle System child object of the camera in the example scene for the rain effect settings; copy over or remake this object in your custom scene.

Unit Prefabs

Instance the appropriate unit prefabs: ChrUsaArmyInfantryAcu01PrefabDataMono, VehicleHumV, and Abrams.

Next, disable each prefab on startup. They will be added to ResourceLoader for user instantiation at run-time.

TerrainDestructor Prefab

Add a TerrainDestructor prefab to enable trigger of an IED type of destruction at run-time. Set Mouse Destruction Button as 2 for middle-click.

Canvas Object

Refer to the Canvas object in the example scene for toggling unit types; copy over or remake this object in your custom scene.

RideSystems Prefab

Instance the RideSystems prefab in your scene, then expand it in the Hierarchy view. ResourceLoader prefab, under Scene Game Objects, add ChrUsaArmyInfantryAcu01PrefabDataMono, VehicleHumV, and Abrams prefabs from the scene.

Ensure UnityAStarMovementSystem prefab is enabled; disable UnityNavMeshMovementSystem. Important, the scene requires A* Pathfinding Pro package as noted previously to function properly.

Purpose

Demonstrates loading of terrain maps into a specific scene with REST features.

How to Use

LocalTerrainLoader

This scene points at a C:\TerrainsAvailable folder and looks for LMAB terrain data in legacy or new STPLS 1.4 format – this is the type of terrain that the majority of people have been collecting locally – served out via systems like Set-Repo…

This is very similar to the previous ATLAS terrain loader.

The scene creates a button for each of the terrains in the TerrainsAvailable folder and clicking that button then loads that terrain into a specific scene (currently this is hardcoded as LocalTerrainPlayer).

LocalTerrainPlayer

This scene just loads up a terrain, and in the case of it being a Data Model (STPLS 1.4) Terrain it also enables REST features… right now there would be no reason to run this scene independently – it should always be called from LocalTerrainLoader.

This scene also acts as a test scene for Data Model terrains and creates a REST web service for querying and interacting with them.

Overview

Purpose

This example scene shows how to create an interactive tour around a terrain using scenario events and custom AI behaviors. In this example, the player tours the fictional city of Razish, located in the real world at the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin, California.

How to Use

This example scene begins with an overhead view and fly-through of the city of Razish, with a moving camera and a recorded audio clip. When this introductory fly-through is finished, you take on the role of an Iraqi woman following her two friends and their two children on a walking tour of Razish. Maneuver your avatar using the W-A-S-D keys on your keyboard or with a gamepad controller. When you arrive at each tour stop, an audio clip describing the site will be triggered. At the end of the walking tour, the scene will return to an overhead view for a final fly-through of the city.

Setup Requirements

Scenario System

Utilize the RIDE Scenario System to create Scenario Events that are triggered by Scenario Conditions. Several built-in scenario events and scenario conditions are provided by the RIDE platform. This example scene demonstrates several types of built-in Scenario Event types, including an AgentBehaviourScenarioEvent to assign the TourBehaviour to the tour guide agent, and an AudioScenarioEvent to play clips using RIDE’s Audio System.

Custom Scenario Events

Utilize a CustomScenarioEvent in order to execute arbitrary code when Scenario Conditions are met. This example scene demonstrates several instances of CustomScenarioEvent, including the switching from overhead view to control of an avatar, the programmed camera movements of the two fly-through sequences.

Observation Scenario Conditions

Utilize an ObservationScenarioCondition to create a Scenario Condition for any arbitrary World Event that is dispatched by RIDE, and represented an logical (symbolic) form by RIDE’s Interpretation System. In this example, an ObservationScenarioCondition is triggered when the Interpretation System encodes a FlagCaptured World Event. Please see Interpretation System documentation for details on writing patterns for ObservationScenarioConditions.

Purpose

Apply explosive ordnance of user-set intensity and size at any location on a terrain map. Deformation of the surface geometry may change depending on the material/structure classification at that point.

How to Use

Select your desired terrain map and choose Load Terrain. Once the terrain completes streaming into the scene, use the Destructibility Settings pop-up sliders to adjust the Power and Range values for the explosive ordnance.

Settings

Power, set from 0 to 2000; default 300
Range, set from 0 to 5; default 1
Middle-click a point on the map to trigger the explosive ordnance

Camera

Hold right-click and move cursor to rotate camera
Press WASD keys to move camera
Press QE keys to rotate camera
Hold Space bar to raise camera

Setup Requirements

Utilize the destructibility commands API for your scene by adding the Destructor prefab, which includes the necessary Fine Breaker, Chip Mesh At Point, Voronoi Cache and Cached Split Trees script components, as well as the Destructibility Settings panel Canvas object.

Destructor Prefab

First, instance the Destructor Prefab in your scene, which contains the Fine Breaker script that defines the values for user-set destructibility.

Example Load Terrain Script, Terrain Camera and Event System Objects

In order to load terrain maps, add the ExampleLoadTerrain script to an empty game object in your scene.

Enable the triggering of explosive ordnance command with the EventSystem object.

If you wish to manipulate the camera, replace Main Camera with the TerrainCamera prefab, or add SimpleTerrainCamera script component to Main Camera.

Purpose

Create a navigation mesh from local OWT data for agent pathing.

How to Use

Prerequisites

Ensure you’ve completed the “Adding a Scene Persistent Terrain” section of Terrain Loading in order to use this navigation mesh generation method.

Normally terrain in the Split LMAB format streams into the scene at run-time via network or datacache folder, otherwise not appearing when working “offline” in the Unity Scene panel to create/edit a scene. Instead of using the network or datacache for run-time streaming, a terrain map can be instanced in a local scene by way of the Load Tiles script and Single LMAB terrain map format.

Important

The initial loading of the Single LMAB terrain format of datasets within the RIDE Terrain Library into the local scene must be done while on the ICT domain or wherever the Single LMAB format of your terrain dataset is hosted within your organization’s domain.

Local Navigation Mesh Generation

Generate a local navigation mesh using the following steps:

In your unity scene, create an empty game object (Game Object → Create Empty) and attach the LoadTiles component.
Un-check “Load at start” and put the path of the terrain that you wish to load (example, Assets/StreamingAssets/Ride_Terrains/USC_LMAB_SEGT_ENU_5cm_170520_Tile/terrainDescriptionSplit.json for USC Campus).
From the Unity menu toolbar, select Ride → Terrain → Load Plane, and wait for the terrain to load.
Once loaded, go to Window → AI → Navigation. This will open the Navigation window.
Select Mesh Renders under the Object tab and then select all the mesh renderers under TerrainRoot in the hierarchy window. Make sure the Navigator Static checkbox is checked.
Select the Bake tab, and then click the Bake button.
A new folder will be created in the same folder as your scene with the same name. Inside of this folder is the navigation mesh data.
Select terrain root and delete it.
Submit the scene and the navigation data to version control as normal.

Adding a Scene Persistent Terrain

How to Create a Local Terrain Instance

Important

This method should only be done in special cases, as the resulting scene file can be >1GB in size, and will greatly increase the size of a standalone build, as terrain streaming is no longer used.

Additionally, the initial loading of the Single LMAB terrain format into the scene must be done while on the ICT domain. If remote, ensure your ICT VPN is active.

Create New Scene.
Top menu, GameObject -> Create Empty
Rename object “Terrain” or similar.
Inspector, Add Component -> Load Tiles (script)
Set the Terrain Root parameter to the newly created game object.
Set the folder path to one of the LMAB paths listed in ExampleLoadTerrain.cs. Note, only Single LMAB terrain maps will work.
Lod field, input an available LOD for the terrain map, per ExampleLoadTerrain.cs listing.
Ensure system connected to ICT domain (ICT VPN, if remote).
Top menu, Ride -> Terrain -> Load OWT Terrain
Unity may become unresponsive for several minutes at this time, as the streaming process into the scene occurs on the main CPU thread. Duration will vary by Internet connection speed.
Once complete, the terrain map appears in Scene view.
The Terrain Root object will now contain all the terrain tiles beneath it.
The Terrain Lood Tiles script is no longer used inside the Terrain Root object. Uncheck its box in the Inspector panel to disable this component.
Save the scene; this may take several seconds to complete.
Play of the scene in the Game panel will also now take several seconds to initialize due to the increase in scene size.

Creating a Nav Mesh for AI Units

AI Units require a navigation mesh in order to utilize the terrain for simulations. Refer to Creating a Navigation Mesh from OWT Data for how to add a nav mesh to a scene.

Programmatically Loading Terrain

The following examples describe basic and advanced methods to load terrain in a custom scene.

Basic Usage

Load a simple Plane

Passing no parameters to LoadTerrainParams() will use all defaults, and load a simple plane instead of an OWT map.

Load a Terrain from a given path

Specifying a path allows you to load a given terrain. The path can be a local path, a network path, or a web url.

Load a Terrain from an index into the GOList array

LoadTerrainParams has many options for loading the terrain in different ways. Here are all the parameters:

LoadTerrainProgress parameter descriptions

This class is updated whenever progress happens during the LoadTerrain() process

overallProgress – An overall progress value between 0…1
renderLoadFinished – Set to true when the render portion of terrain loading is finished
physicsLoadFinished – Set to true when the physics (mesh colliders) portion of terrain loading is finished

LoadTerrainParams parameter descriptions

path – Path to your terrain assets. The path can be a local path, a network path, or a web url. If you are using tiles, the path needs to point to a terrainDescription.json file.
pathcrc – Optional path to the .crc file of the terrainDescription.json file. Only used if useTiles is set to true. This is used to verify if the local cached copy of terrainDescription.json is up-to-date. If not, it will retrieve the new version.
pathIndex – Index into the Terrain Paths array in the GOList GameObject. Specify this or path, do not specify both.
lod – Optional String identifier of the LOD you wish to load. If you specify a string here and the tile name contains this string, it will load the tile, otherwise all available LODs will be loaded. LODs are typically named ‘L16’, ‘L18’, etc.
loadPhysics – Set this to true if you wish to load physics (mesh colliders) with the terrain. Since this is very time consuming, setting this to false will speed up the loading.
loadTrees – Set this to true if you wish to run through the tree replacement code.
useTiles – Set this to true to use the new TILE file format.
dataCache – Set this to a given DataCache object. This is only used when useTiles is set to false. If useTiles is set to true, it will use its own internal DataCache object.
gameObjectRootName – This is the root GameObject where all the terrain assets will be parented under. If the string doesn’t exist, the GameObject will be created. This needs to be unique, else it will Find() the incorrect object.
startLoadingPriorityPosition – This is a position in world space where the terrain tiles will start loading from. For example, if you set this to the camera’s position, it will load all the tiles in the general vicinity of the camera, giving the user immediate visual feedback that the terrain is loading.
renderRadius – This is a radius value specified in distance units from startLoadingPriorityPosition. Any tile outside of this radius will not be loaded. This can be done to improve loading performance if you do not need the entire terrain.
loadTerrainProgress – This is a user provided instance of LoadTerrainProgress that can be used to monitor the loading progress and determine when it is finished.

Advanced Usage Example

Here is an example of loading a terrain using the advanced usage.

This uses the new Split LMAB file format, by setting useTiles to true.
This loads the terrains from a web url, and specifies the .crc file to make sure the local cached copy is up-to-date.
loadPhysics is set to true. If we wanted faster loading performance, we could set this to false. This can be useful if you were loading two terrain sets. The lower LOD version would load the physics, and the second, higher LOD would skip physics loading.
loadTrees is set to false to improve load times.
gameObjectRootName is set to ‘Razish’ so that all terrain assets will be parented under this GameObject. If it doesn’t exist in the scene, it will be created.
startLoadingPriorityPosition is set to the camera’s position so that it gives the user immediate visual feedback as the terrain loads.
renderRadius could be used to limit how much terrain is loaded.
loadTerrainProgress is passed in so we can provide the user feedback of the terrain loading progress and monitor when the load is finished.
